Location
Fužine is a renowned tourist town with a long tradition of tourism that dates back to the year 1874 when first guests from Sušak, Rijeka and other coastal towns arrived by special trains. Even before that, many inns and caravan rest stops were built on the Carolina road (1737), on which Fužine themselves developed, so one can say that Fužine is one of the oldest touristic places of Kvarner, Croatia, and even Middle Europe.
The town is located on 730 meters above sea-level. The climate is a continental variant of the Mediterranean climate with beautiful spring, summer and autumn and snowy, often long winters. Average air temperature is 7.6 degrees Celsius. In the summer temperatures rarely rise above 30 degrees Celsius, and there are almost no hot nights. So the climate in the summer is very pleasant, as are the stable winter days with a lot of snow. Fužine is known for its clean mountain air, due to predominant north-eastern winds. From the nearby summits (Bitoraj 1385 meters, Viševica 1428 meters, Tuhobić 1106 meters, Preradović 885 meters) one can view the lively woodland areas of Gorski kotar and the surrounding areas: lakes, towns of Vrata, Lič and Fužine, karst Lika valley, but also the sea, the coast and the islands of Kvarner.
Fužine is excellently connected with the rest of Croatia. The area borders with the Kvarner bay, so it is only 30 kilometres to the sea coast (Rijeka and Crikveničko-vinodolska Riviera), and only 22 kilometres to the island of Krk. Fužine is in direct vicinity of the new Zagreb-Rijeka motorway, and so are easy to get to, and one can also visit them via a romantic train ride. So, one can spend one’s summer vacation by spending one’s nights in Fužine, and at the same time enjoy the sea.
Fužine is renowned for the bountifulness of water. There are three storage lakes: Bajer, Lepenica and Potkoš that have blended excellently into the landscape of Gorski kotar. They are rich with fish and are a true bait for fishermen. Clear waters abound with trout, chub, marble trout, carp, pike, amur… Sailing regattas and diving competitions are held on the lakes, and one can also surf, drive boats or canoes. Deep forests of Gorski kotar are perfect for hunting because they abound mostly in big game, but also other types of game.
An important tourist attraction is the Vrelo cave. It was discovered in the 1950s, during the construction of the Bajer lake. It is very well lit and equipped for tours with an expert guide. It is 300 meters long and is specific because it is the only tourist cave in Croatia with an underground river. Also, it has a specific configuration (i.e. no stairs), so it is also accessible to persons in wheelchairs. Due to its accessibility and attractiveness, it is popular with all generations, from kindergarten children to elderly persons.
